ABOUT US
The Redemptorists are a religious congregation of priests and brothers within the Catholic Church who live in community for the sake of preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ, especially among people on the margins of society and church.
Founded in southern Italy in 1732 by St Alphonsus Liguori, Redemptorists are in a majority of countries across the world. Most of our members belong to the Roman Church (Rite), but we have members also in other Churches (Rites) who are in communion with the Holy See.
Redemptorists have been present in the lives of the people of New Zealand for over 130 years. Australian Redemptorists began travelling to New Zealand to preach summer missions beginning in 1883.
The success of these missions, and the connections they made with the communities they served, led to the acquisition of a property on Wellington’s Mount Victoria. This was to be the site of the first Redemptorist community to permanently settle in New Zealand.
Today the Redemptorists are proud to continue to serve the people of New Zealand and the Mangere Catholic Parishes of St Anthony in Mangere Bridge and St Therese Parish in Mangere East.
Our full name is The Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer – in Latin Congregatio Sanctissimi Redemptoris from which come the letters C.Ss.R. These letters designate membership in the Congregation.
They also form the basis of our web address: www.cssr.org.nz
